PROJECTS

The following projects have been identified by Bioforest because of the potential they have to offer environmental services at a national and international level. To move forward with these projects, financial resources are needed to complete the feasibility studies.

Amarakaeri Comunal Reserve REDD Project

The Amarakaeri REDD project seeks to establish conservation and preservation activities in the Amarakaeri Communal Reservation, which is a Protected Natural Area for the Peruvian State. The area was established in May 2003, on a surface of 402 335 ha. This area is under co-management of the National Service of Protected Natural Areas (SERNANP) and the Executioner of the Administration Contract for the Amarakaeri Communal Reservation, institutions that represents the 10 native communities that are traditional beneficiaries of the area. This area is of vital importance due to the fact that belongs is located between Manu National Park, Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and It forms part of an international conservation corridor that includes protected areas in Bolivia and Brazil. This is one of the most bio diverse areas on Earth. This area is under threat because of the effect of illegal logging, population migrating from poor areas that transform forest in agriculture land, the development of new infrastructure in the area like the inter oceanic highway and informal mining activities.

Pampa Hermosa Conservation Concession REDD Project

The Pampa Hermosa Conservation Concession REDD project looks for the establishment of a conservation area of around 22 000 ha. This project will be executed with the support and participation of the local communities settled around the area. To preserve this area is important because it is the origin of several rivers like Tulumayo, Huatzirok, Pichanaki and Ipoki, which born in the highlands of Pui Pui and are vital for the normal water flux for human consumption and agriculture in the Chanchamayo and Perene Valleys. The proposed Conservation area is part of the Buffer zone of the Pui Pui Protection Forest, which is a 60 000 ha Natural Protected Area established in 1985 by the Peruvian government. The project could extend its activities in the future and include the management of the PUI PUI Protected Forest by signing an agreement with the National Service for Natural Protected Areas of Peru - SERNANP.

Chavini Conservation Concession REDD Project

The Chavini Conservation Concession REDD Project looks for the establishment of a conservation area of around 11 000 ha. This project will be executed in coordination with local authorities and with the support and participation of the local communities settled around the area. The preservation of this area is important because it is the origin of the Chavini and San Ramón Rivers, where the Hydroelectric generation firm Empresa Generadora de Electricidad de Pangoa S.A. (EGEPSA) is located. The project wants to manage the mentioned river basins through conservation and regeneration activities like reforestation with native species. The first phase of the project will determine the components and variables that affect this basins and the classification of risks and conflicts between nature and human activity that have an effect on the quantity, quality and regularity of water flow.
